Being brought up by his grandparents, Stephen was taught to always be a caring, loving, and thinking of others. At a young age, Stephen was out with his grandmother volunteering at local parks. They would often plant flowers and trees and be out mowing grass or feeding the birds. Stephen continued the tradition even when his grandmother wasn't able to go or when Stephen started becoming independent and taking on volunteer projects on his own.
When he was thirteen, Stephen started to volunteer on his own with an organization by starting a chapter for Holland Park. The organization was known most for planting and taking care of trees. Because of this, Stephen found himself driving down the road in the organization's truck, loaded down with another set of trees. The city had decided they wanted another row of trees in the park and had asked for their help. Stephen drove down the road to the park and pulled into a space as close as he could get. He wouldn't be able to drive the truck to the exact spot, so he and the handful of other volunteers would have to carry the trees down to where they were to be planted.
Stephen knew he couldn't do this job alone, so when he got the truck settled, he killed the engine, stepped out, and headed to the back of the truck. But instead of trying to do it himself, he simply pulled down the back and sat down as he waited for everyone to show up and help get the trees in the ground.
