The most annoying part, by far, of living at a school was the mandatory hall meetings that happened every year. Having already been there for a year, Alex ought to have been able to remember when those meetings were or to get herself there on time. Truth be told, though, Alex was never on time for anything. She was constantly in trouble for that, and she had a feeling her father's money was the only thing keeping her in school with the number of absences she'd racked up simply by being too late for class. Tonight, she'd come back to her dorm after dinner and spent an excess of time painting her toenails bright green. She hardly even noticed when her room mate headed out the door.
Alex and Melody weren't friends. Not really. They tolerated one another, which was necessary when living in close quarters, but that was the best Alex could really say for their relationship. So it wasn't entirely surprising that the girl had left without letting Alex know that they were supposed to be somewhere.
She'd just capped her polish when she glanced up at the calendar hanging among the masses of photographs and posters on her side of the room. Groaning, she smacked her palm against her forehead. According to the glowing red numbers on her alarm clock, she was now seven minutes late for the hall meeting. It was only a matter of time before someone came looking for her. Jumping out of her chair, Alex slipped her feet into a pair of flip flops and grabbed the first available shirt, pulling it over her head as she walked out the door.
By the time she made it to the common area where the other girls had congregated, she was freezing. Tank tops and cropped pants didn't exactly keep a girl warm. Letting out a huff, she stopped beside a pretty girl with auburn hair. She hadn't seen her before, but there were a lot of new girls in the school, so that didn't surprise Alex. "Did it have to be so fucking freezing? You'd think they know how to turn on the heater," she mused, offering the girl a small smile.

Cam wasn't exactly sure what these hall meetings really were about. At the start of the year they'd had to make silly hall rules like clean up in the bathroom or whether or not they could go to the bathroom in their underwear. As well as listen to all the basic dorm rules and policies of the school. So far, this one wasn't so different. Cam tried to glance around the room, picking out faces. She was sort of sorry not to have a roommate, it was hard enough to make friends without being a sophomore in a single.
A girl appeared beside her and started cursing about the temperature. Cam blinked. She hadn't much noticed, but after a look at the girl, it was no wonder she was cold. It was early December after all. Granted, the heat was supposed to be on in this building. She smiled softly at the girl and shrugged. Their RA was droning something about graffiti in the bathroom stalls.
Cam had seen it, it was nothing so serious really, just venting usually. If they had a communal white board or something, people would probably spare the stall walls. "You haven't missed much." Cam told her. Around here, her accent wasn't too unusual, though most people thought she was from Britain and not Australia, until she slipped and said 'mate' anyway.

As luck would have it, Alex seemed to have found herself standing beside one of the most timid girls she'd found at the school so far. It wasn't a bad thing, really. After all, so many of the people Alex came into contact with here seemed to believe that their particular talents made them better than anyone else. This girl didn't seem to have that inclination, so Alex was more than happy to speak to her. Besides that, the tiny smile the girl offered her was absolutely adorable, and when she did speak, her words were colored with a lilting accent.
"They never really talk about anything relevant at these things," Alex replied, tuning out the RA's comments about graffiti in the bathrooms, which Alex and a few of her cohorts had put there themselves. Really, the school shouldn't be surprised when art students took their art to the walls. Alex glanced around the room briefly before turning her gaze back to the girl beside her. "I'm Alex. And I'm guessing you're either new or a total recluse," she offered, figuring either would be a reasonable excuse for their having never been introduced.
Bouncing on the balls of her feet impatiently, Alex took a moment to really look at the girl. She was adorable, but she did look terribly innocent and just a little uncomfortable. Probably, no one had bothered to let her know that she was beautiful or that she deserve to have company. Offering her a slight smirk, Alex continued, "I'm also guessing you aren't doing anything after this meeting. So you should come get some hot chocolate with me." It wasn't a date or even technically a come-on. Alex just hated not knowing people, and she figured the girl wouldn't mind having some company.

Cam blushed a little when Alex said she was either new or a recluse. Was she so easy to spot? She'd never been one for too much limelight on a personal level. Cam assumed she became part of the background, though her bright hair, accent and love of funky sweaters probably made her rather visible. "I'm new, its my first year here... I'm a sophomore, but I transfered..." Cam rambled for a moment shaking her head. "I'm Cam, nice to meet you." She spoke softly, trying not to make it totally obvious that she wasn't paying attention to the RA. Really, she was already breaking the pets rule and didn't want to risk any other issues. So far so good on keeping her kitten hidden though.
Cam chuckled at the offer, letting herself look over Alex. She looked harmless, and was quite pretty. She'd gotten teased quite a bit for being gay at her old school and had no idea what the atmosphere was like here. But either way, she could use a friend. "Yeah sure, though I think you'll need a jacket or something." Cam said with a little smile.
The RA seemed to sense that she wasn't getting anywhere and dismissed the group with a warning to respect school property, and a reminder about lights out.

As she'd expected, the girl was new. It was somewhat of a relief to learn this, as the other option would mean that she'd been holed up in her room for the duration of her attendance at RWA. "Sweet. I'm a Sophomore, too. Which program are you in?" Regardless of the program, they were bound to have at least some common academic classes together. Unless, of course, the girl was one of those genius students who took courses far above her grade level.
Alex fought the urge to smirk as she realized Cam was attempting to look like she was at least semi-invested in the meeting. The girl had probably never been in trouble in her life, a fact which was pitiable as far as Alex was concerned. Girls who didn't break rules generally didn't have enough fun. But she wasn't going to point that out just yet. She didn't want to scare the poor girl before she'd even had a chance to get to know her.
Hall meetings always seemed to last forever, and this one was no exception. Once Cam had agreed to go get hot chocolate with her, Alex found that time seemed to drag. Finally, though, the RA wrapped up, and the girls were free. Turning to Cam with a grin, Alex motioned for her to follow her. "Lemme change real quick," she explained, heading for her dorm. After all, being cold inside the dorms would mean freezing once they got outside.
Letting them both into the room she shared with Melody, Alex began sifting through small piles of clothes. She wasn't shy in the least, so when she'd found a halfway suitable outfit, she proceeded to change, shimmying out of her yoga pants without warning. Hopefully Cam either didn't mind or enjoyed the view, which was accented by a pair of bright blue lacey underwear. Undergarments were some of the few feminine things in Alex's wardrobe. Tugging on her jeans, she turned back toward Cam. "Do you need to be back before lights out?" she asked, figuring she already knew the answer. The girls had a curfew, and Cam seemed the type to adhere to it. Alex figured she'd let her get away with that for now.

Cam smiled. A new friend! On her floor, and a sophomore? This was good luck. "Um, music. I play the cello." She explained. Obviously they had to take all the core classes, sciences, history, lit and what not, but then they got time for their passions. "You?" She asked. Cello wasn't exactly the coolest of instruments to most people. But Cam loved it, a cello sounded almost like a human voice, it was rich and deep and beautiful.
When the meeting ended, Alex said she'd change and started off before Cam could ask where they should meet. She did still have everything so she muttered, "I guess I'll follow you then.." And jogged to catch up with her new friend. It seemed Alex expected her to follow her in, so Cam gingerly stepped inside and took a look around. One side was very neat, the other a mess, the walls almost as cluttered as the floors. It seemed unlikely that the two would pick each other as roommates... Maybe they were less fortunate in the housing crisis.
Then, all of a sudden, Alex was changing. "Oh!" Cam said before she could stop herself, covering her eyes. In her mind she could still see the gentle curve of the other girl's ass and she found herself wondering if maybe she should tell Alex she was a lesbian. Her cheeks burned as she tried to compose herself, not sure what to do about this. Especially when Alex was talking along like it was no big deal.
"I, uh, yes," Cam said. "I'm sort of... hiding a pet in my room so I have to be prepared when they come in for bed check." No to mention she didn't have a roommate who could fill her bed with pillows and hide her cat. Alex seemed like the type to break rules, so hopefully she wouldn't tell about Cam's pet.

Truth be told, Alex had never met anyone who played the cello, but it sounded interesting enough. She herself had very little musical talent. "Cool," she replied, offering the girl a smile. "I'm an artist." Alex always felt a little be famous when she referred to herself like that, and she couldn't help puffing her chest out a bit in pride. "I draw. I like to think one day I'll be a famous tattoo artist." She wasn't shy about explaining her goals in life, impractical and inappropriate as some might have thought them to be. "I did my own tattoo last summer," Alex offered in a conspiratorial whisper, turning her wrist over to show off her handiwork.
It hadn't even occurred to Alex that her new friend (Alex considered everyone she'd met who hadn't been a total jerk to be a friend) wouldn't follow her, so she hadn't bothered to tell her that she ought to. Fortunately, Cam seemed to be pretty quick-witted, and she took the hint to follow Alex to her room. "My roommate and I obviously don't mesh," she explained, gesturing toward the walls as she moved about, easily navigating the stacks of clothing around her side of the room.
As she'd expected, Cam seemed to be more than a little embarrassed by Alex's state of undress, and Alex couldn't help but giggle. "Please," she giggled, "If you see anything you haven't seen before, throw a rock at it." It was something her grandmother had said often when she was little, and it seemed appropriate now. After all, the two did have all the same parts. Of course that didn't change the fact that Cam was obviously painfully shy about this sort of thing, so Alex tugged her clothes on quickly. Once she was properly covered, she turned to smirk at Cam. "You can look now," she told her, her words lilting with the laughter she was trying to suppress.
Based on the girl's reaction to her nudity, Alex figured she was right to expect that Cam followed rules. That being said, she was more than a little surprised to hear that Cam was hiding a pet. Arching an eyebrow, Alex passed a discerning gaze over the girl again. "Oooh, so you've got a little rule-breaker in you aver all!" Alex teased. Grabbing her bag, she slipped her feet back into her flip flops and headed for the door, grabbing Cam's hand along the way just in case the girl had started having second thoughts about joining her.

Cameron smiled. She couldn't draw worth a damn. A tattoo artist even! Cam had never had such an off color and dangerous friend before and frankly it was kind of exciting. "Wow," She offered appropriately. She'd wondered about maybe getting a tattoo one day, maybe a little singing bird or something. Something musical to be sure.
Cam laughed at her roommate comment and nodded. "Yeah... I have a single, but that makes it harder to make friends somehow." She said looking around. Someone to come home to was nice. But that's at least why she had Vivaldi the kitten. Cam watched her pick her way through piles of her things and get dressed.
At the saying she laughed. "Never heard that before," She admitted. "Is that a typical American saying I should know?" She asked, realizing maybe she was missing out on something basic. Everywhere had their own slang and she was working on getting up to speed with the basics here.
At Alex's last comment Cam cracked a little grin and chuckled. "Yeah, I guess so." She said with a smile, glad that Alex didn't find her too unexciting. Cam did follow the rules, or at least, she knew enough to be careful when she broke them.
