Seth still wasn't sure what movies were playing that night, but he did know that he wasn't going to spend all evening at home alone. Again. His parents had been spending a lot of time down at the church, or at some work function, book fair or holiday party. It was friday night and his parents were gone, a sitter had been procured for his siblings. He had no dates on the horizon, so he decided to catch a movie, alone.
He drove his old beater bronco through town, parking it in the lot at the movie theater, he got out, shoved his keys down into his jeans pocket and locked the door. He made his way to the ticket counter... mentally deciding what to watch... no rom com, no kids movie, let's go for action. "One for the Tom Cruise flick please." He handed the teller a $10 bill and waited patiently for his change and his ticket. "Thank you" he said and made his way inside. He had already made the decision to get popcorn and a drink, but to splurge for some candy. Heck yes, he thought to himself. So he got in line at the counter to buy his snacks.

It had a been a crazy week, a new babysitter for Mikey, trying to get a better job, crazy kids at school... They needed a treat, so after a dinner of pizza, Oliver decided to take his son to the movies. Having a kid really changed what movies you got to see, but he didn't mind too much. Oliver had a very soft spot, a piece that wanted to be that little kid--before school and training, and the trauma of his wife's death.
Mikey ran up ahead to the ticket booth, pulling his monkey hat down over his ears. Oliver really should have put him in a warmer jacket, but the temperature kept fluctuating all day. Hard to know. "Slow down buddy," He called after his three year old son, jogging to catch up. For the two years he'd lived there, he could say that he trusted the people here, so it wasn't so bad if Mike ran ahead, but not too far.
At the counter, Oliver put a hand on his son's shoulder. "One adult and one child for... the new Ice Ae sequel." He said, sliding his money to the teller and taking his boy inside and to the line. Mikey jumped in excitement. "I can get pa'corn daddy?!" he nearly shreiked, causing Oliver to laugh and shake his head.
"Sure do buddy, popcorn it is." He smiled. Things were hard without his wife, but he could tell that Mikey was happy, and he was glad for that.

Seth could not believe he was alone tonight at the movies, again. This had become too much of a repeat situation for him. He should have just text Bridget to come and meet him, but that was too easy and he hated seeming so desperate. He had only a few couples in line ahead of him for snacks, but he took the time to look at facebook on his phone - seeing what all his friends were up to tonight just made him feel worse, so he shoved the phone back into his jeans pocket.
That was when he heard the shrieking child, hoping for popcorn. He immediately recognized the small voice. Mikey. He turned and waved at his teacher, neighbor, and friend, Oliver. "Hey guys" he said, side stepping the line, letting people in front of him, so that he could go and talk to them. He tapped Mikey's head, pushing his hat down over his eyes a little. "Hey bud... whatcha going to see?" He squatted to talk to the small boy. Then stood back up, "Hey man", he said to Oliver, extending a hand to shake. He had been feeling bad for his friend, losing his wife and all... but he seemed to be dealing with it well and that was good, for Mikey's sake.

"Hey Seth," Oliver said, taking his hand and shaking it. They were beyond handshakes, but he couldn't leave the guy hanging. His parents were nice people, they'd been very welcoming when he moved to Rosewood about two years ago. Seth was one of his students, as well as a neighbor. He seemed lonely recently though, Oliver could see it on his face.
Mikey pulled on Seth's jeans. [color=white"Hi Sef!"
He said with a grin. "We're seeing Ice Age 5," Mikey made the number with his fingers, holding up a hand to Seth. He smiled. Seth always listened to him, or at least said hi. "So what are you here to see?" Oliver asked Seth, resisting the urge to add a homework joke. He would have asked about who Seth was here with, but he got the impression that it was a bad idea, it couldn't be a date given that he'd come over to say hi. Not that he'd ever really seen Seth dating anyone.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

Seth was actually glad to see some familiar faces, although he knew that Oliver would have never bought Mikey tickets to see the action movie that he was seeing... so he'd still be alone then, but it was okay there in the dark of the theater where no one knew who he was. It was nice to have someone to talk to here and now though, waiting in line to reach the snack counter.
Oliver had always been a nice guy, and kind of a role model for Seth. He wants to be the same kind of cool dad that he is with Mikey. They shook hands and he smiled at his friends. Having younger siblings helped Seth when it came to Mikey - he enjoyed playing with the little tyke and had experience talking to him about things that he might like too. "Wow, Ice Age 5 huh... that's awesome." He smiled at Mikey, "You will have to tell me if it's any good, okay buddy."
He smiled again, "I'm gonna see the new Mission Impossible, I have to see it to be able to make fun of it," he chuckled a little at his joke. He kind of expected Oliver to say something about the homework that he should be home doing, but only because he always asks about homework. But it was friday night, he had all weekend to work on home work and study for finals. "So, what's been going on? Haven't seen you guys in a few days."

"Okay," Mikey nodded, looking up at Seth with a little smile. He bounced on the balls of his feet lightly, Oliver's hand on his shoulder to keep him from running off. He was an excitable child.
Oliver chuckled and nodded. "Never was a mission impossible person either way," He shrugged. Oliver had always been the hard action type. He had been a rebellious young man, tattooed coast guard at one point. He still was, but now he was single dad and a teacher, and he had to change his tastes a bit. He loved teaching, and he loved being a dad, but he did miss days when he could ride his motorcycle with his bride and just go anywhere.
"Just been busy, got Mikey here a new babysitter," Oliver started, but Mikey cut him off, tugging on Seth's jacket.
"Her name's Alex, and she plays dress up with me." Mikey said with a smile. Oliver chuckled, remembering when they met. It had a been a nice scene, she seemed like a good kid.
"I'm also trying to get a job at the academy, not because I don't love the local high school, it just has more benefits and I'm trying to think of Mikey..." Oliver said looking down at his son. He only wanted the best for him. "But don't worry, whatever happens, I'm finishing out the year, so you still have to do my homework." He joked lightly. But Seth lived next door, so Oliver would never be too far away.

“Gotcha, I’m not a huge Tom Cruise fan myself, but the action and CGI scenes are usually pretty good, so I thought I’d see it anyways.” Seth smiled, knowing that he probably seemed super pathetic to come see a movie by him self in the first place. Seth just nodded as Oliver updated him on the new baby sitter and what all they’ve done the past few days. But felt a pang in his gut when he mentioned applying for jobs at the academy.
He was sure that Oliver could pick up on his obvious disappointment, but he tried to sounds positive when he spoke. “I get it man, that what you have to do as a Dad… but us ‘wrong side of the track’ kids sure will miss having you around next year.” He smiled, and tried to let it go. Seth had formed an odd but close bond with this man who was his teacher, neighbor and dare he say, friend.

Oliver nodded. "Brave going to the movies by yourself you know, shows people you don't need them to have a good time. Chicks dig the brooding one man show, believe me." Oliver winked lightly. His past was no secret. He still wore leather and denim and his tattoos were still visible (obviously depending on his clothing). He'd never felt weird doing things alone, but other people did, so he figured he could let Seth know that it was really alright.
Oliver could see the sadness in Seth's eyes and put a hand on the boy's shoulder. "I'm not going anywhere yet, they may not even take me." He assured him. The whole thing was anything but easy, Oliver loved the local high school but he did need the money.
They reached the counter and Oliver said, "What do you want Seth?" He asked, reaching for his wallet. Might as well buy the snacks for the three of them--even if they were going in to see different things.

“Thanks man, there is only one girl I care about diggin’ it, but she’s in dance class tonight.” Seth smiled back at his teacher and friend, knowing that Oliver probably knew exactly whom he was mentioning anyways. “Good to know though that I’m not the only dude that hangs out at movies alone from time to time.” Seth wasn’t really in the habit of doing things alone, but he was still waiting on one girl to get her act together. He’d been fighting his feelings for her for years now.
“Yeah, yeah. Why would they not want you Olly? You’re a great teacher.” Seth smiled, trying to hide the hurt he was feeling at the thought of losing one of the best teachers he’d ever had. Oliver had actually been the one to inspire Seth to do better in school again, to finish, graduate and even maybe consider college. He wasn’t sure if Oliver knew that or not, but he sure didn’t want to get into it here.
Seth was surprised that Oliver was offering to buy his snacks. “You don’t have to…” he said in hushed tones as he tried to pull out his own wallet. He didn’t have money for much, but didn’t want Oliver to know that. He’d only just wanted a drink.

Seth's words made Oliver chuckled lightly. It didn't take a genius to figure out he was talking about Bridget. Oliver knew they were friends, from both sides. Seth lived next door and Bridget was his niece by law, so between that, it left him in a good spot to match make, but he figured they could figure it out on their own. "Ah I see." He said with a smile, letting Seth know he was okay with the pairing.
He shrugged, "Not enough education, a kid, widower, sorted past..." Oliver laughed. "Sometimes these things are more about politics and pedigree than about skills." He said. Seth might be young enough not to know that, but it was the sad truth about the world.
"No come one, snacks are on me, what would you like?" Oliver insisted. He was a dad, and he wanted to give the guy something, he seemed down enough as it was. Oliver could afford this.

Seth was glad that Oliver wasn't weird at all when he mentioned the girl he wanted to be with, knowing that the two of them were related. He was glad that even though Seth himself was known as a 'bad boy' that at least Oliver approved of their matching up. He wasn't sure that everyone in his life would feel the same way, he had plans to make things move a little quicker on New Years Eve. His parents are the ones he'd be worried about approving of his relationship with Bridget. They thought that she was too good for him.
"Well, if it's what you want, then I hope you get the job man." Seth smiled at him - not sure of how he really felt about the situation, but sure that what he said about how he felt was true. He did want Oliver to get the job if that was important to him, and for Mikey.
"Okay, okay..." he finally gave in, stuffing his mostly empty wallet back into his pocket. "Let me get a coke and a small popcorn then," he said to the attendant behind the counter. "Thanks Oliver." He made sure to say thanks for it because he knew he probably hadn't said it enough in other cases.

Oliver smiled softly. Oliver new bad boys, and Seth wasn't really so bad--not nearly as bad as he'd been anyway. Besides, Oliver was pretty sure Bridget could stand a little loosening up. Not to mention, Bridget already admitted liking Seth when she stopped by his office the other day and discussed being invited to his party.
Oliver shrugged, not sure what to say about the whole job thing, hard to say exactly what he really wanted with all of it. Mikey bounced on his toes and told the teen working the snack counter what he wanted, Seth gave his order and Oliver shelled out the cash.
"You're welcome," Oliver said with a soft smile. It was the least he could do, someone had to look out for the kid. Seth's parents weren't always the best when it came to looking out for their son.
